New PUSD Policies Regarding Birthday Parties and Classroom Celebrations

Dear Valley View Parents and Guardians,

In an effort to protect students with severe food allergies, diabetes, and other health conditions and to preserve instructional time, the following guidelines have been developed for all elementary schools in the Pleasanton Unified School District.

Birthday celebrations

Food treats for birthdays at school have been eliminated.  No food treats are allowed in school for birthday celebrations in classrooms and at lunch time. This includes pizza parties, birthday cakes, cookies and cupcakes, etc.  We understand that birthdays are special to all our students; however, we ask that parents plan birthday celebrations for their children away from school.  Please do not send toys, flowers, or balloons, etc. to students in their classrooms.  All deliveries will be returned to the sender.

Classroom parties are limited to four per school year.  The focus should be on light, healthy snacks such as cheese, crackers, fruits and vegetables.  The beverage of choice is water.  Students with allergies should be taken into consideration when planning classroom parties. Please consult with your child’s teacher ahead of time.

Every school in our district has students with life-threatening food allergies.  Parents can help by adhering to the guidelines above and by taking the following actions to provide additional protection:

We depend on all parents to help us create and maintain a safe and nurturing environment for all kids.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Please contact the school office for more information.

Valley View Principal
