Parents: Here's a Great Way to Help Our Schools

School districts throughout the Bay Area, including Pleasanton Unified, are currently experiencing a shortage of substitute teachers. This is in large part due to the improved economy and job market, which has reduced the number of people available to serve as substitute teachers.

We invite and encourage our parents to consider helping out through substitute teaching in Pleasanton.

General Information:
  • Substitutes are currently paid a daily rate of $110. Substitutes can also select morning or afternoon (half-day) assignments
  • The minimum requirements to apply as a substitute teacher are a Bachelor's Degree and passage of the CBEST exam (California Basic Educational Skills Test)
  • You select (online) which daily assignments work for your schedule. You can also choose to work at a particular level (elementary, middle, or high school) to suit your comfort level
  • The district will provide you with an orientation to substitute teaching in our district before you begin
  • Information on the CBEST exam can be found at (or just Google "CBEST")
  • If you are interested in more information or in applying to be a substitute, please email Anna Kennedy in Human Resources:

Pleasanton Unified is holding a Substitute Teacher Information Session on Tuesday, November 4th from 4-6 p.m. at the PUSD District Office (4665 Bernal Ave) for anyone interested. At this event, district representatives will be available to answer your questions and to help to guide you through the steps you need to become a substitute teacher in Pleasanton Unified. In addition, if you are already a credentialed teacher or have taken the CBEST exam previously, we can help you to get signed up at the event. Please RSVP to Anna Kennedy in Human Resources if you would like to attend (email: We hope to see you there!
