Thank you to the two amazing teachers that took time from their families to host this wonderful event: Janet Dobbs and 4th grade teacher Amy Smith. We are very fortunate that Valley View is the only elementary school that does this event. I would like to thank all of the 4th and 5th graders who joined us this year for Dinner with a Scientist - it was an amazing night! We had a great group of scientists that came out and volunteered their time.

Key Note Speaker Dr. Octavio Cervantes: Have you ever had to work on a special school project in which you have to make a physical model? Then, as you gather your ideas, one of the first things that came to your mind was, what materials am I going to use so that my model performs the way I really want it to work? As you look around, you will see that everything is made out of something. For that reason, I decided to pursue a career in Materials Science and Engineering. My job is to develop and understand the properties of new materials for a wide range of applications. I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from California State University, Northridge; M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Davis. I am currently a research scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Alfredo Cantu: I’m a Mechanical Engineer that has specialized in the design, fabrication, testing & evaluation of medical devices for cardiac & spinal surgery and ENT (ears, nose & throat).

Annemarie Erbel: My name is Annemarie and I work for a company called Siemens as an energy engineer.

Eric Harpell: I am a professor of physics, astronomy, and environmental science at Las Positas College in Livermore.

Nancy Hudson: My name is Nancy Hudson and I am a nutrition scientist, which means that I work with food and nutrition.

Tom Manger: I graduated from Towson State University (MD) with a bachelor's degree in physics.

Mark Shusterman M.D.: I am a surgeon who works with companies that build devices to help treat different diseases.

Ryan Jones: Valley View's own tech guy.

Archana Thakur: My name is Archana Thakur and I graduated with a Master's degree in Applied Molecular Biology from the University of Maryland.

Also thank you to our amazing parent volunteers -- we cannot do these kinds of events without you: Wendy Costanzo, Rocio Arango, Monica Helms, Erica McNerny, Jeanette and Erwin Ricafrente, Kara Godi, Susane Head, and Nancy Rae for all her help with the bios and behind-the-scenes work.
